Atlanta United FC Details
Owned by Atlanta Falcons proprietor Arthur Blank, Dogwood City's MLS franchise has authored a story of improbable success. In the club's debut season, the raucous crowds at Mercedez-Benz Stadium quickly cemented the team’s fanbase as one of the best in MLS. The expansion franchise drew 55,297 spectators to its first-ever match, which was the fourth-largest crowd for a soccer game in the world during the first weekend of March, ranking behind only games hosted by international powers Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona. Atlanta United also sold more than 30,000 season tickets for the 2017 season, which is an MLS record for an expansion team.
Among the chants that have become commonplace at home games is “He scores when he wants, he scores when he wants; Josef Martinez, he scores when he wants,” which is an ode to the finishing ability of the striker whose rights were acquired from Torino of the Italian Serie A league. After scoring a hat trick in the team’s first-ever road game against Minnesota, a resounding 6-1 win in the snow that earned Martinez Player of the Week honors, the Venezuelan followed up with a two-goal performance in the club’s first-ever home victory, a 4-0 shutout of the Chicago Fire. Martinez capped that game with one of the best goals in MLS last season, receiving a tight pass before side-stepping the goalkeeper and finishing from an almost impossible angle. He’s a rare talent who alone is worth the price of admission.
In 2017, Atlanta became only the third expansion team to qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs. The postseason run ended after just 120 minutes with a loss-on-penalties to eventual conference finalist Columbus. But an overall record of 15 wins, 10 draws and only 9 losses signaled that the formerly-homeless club is already poised to contend.
Prospects are bright for 2018. Martinez will only improve, entering the prime of his career in America after cutting his teeth in Italy as a young professional. Guzan is a Premier League veteran who will return in goal for Atlanta this year. Head coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino continues to bring a South American tactical flair to the pitch.
